01 · Snow days & warm eveningsChoose skiing, tubing or a quiet mountain break
Book Cataloochee for a ski weekend, Tube World for a shorter family snow outing, or an indoor-pool hotel for a relaxed couple’s break with dining and a scenic drive. Choose one main activity and leave the rest of the weekend flexible.
The attractions use snowmaking when conditions allow. Natural snowfall in the valley varies, so choose operating ski or tubing dates for a snow-focused trip. A warm room and indoor swimming make the evenings part of the holiday.
02 · Snow days & warm eveningsCataloochee skiing and snowboarding
Cataloochee Ski Area sits above Maggie Valley at 1080 Ski Lodge Road. Give a first ski day enough room for equipment fitting and a lesson before slope time. Experienced skiers can shape the visit around the available terrain and their preferred session.
Book your lift access, rentals and lessons as the elements you need, then choose a hotel for the return. Our Cataloochee Ski Area guide covers the practical split between the ski mountain and Tube World. Seasonal opening and terrain depend on conditions.
03 · Snow days & warm eveningsTube World: a shorter snow outing
Tube World is down in the valley at 4721 Soco Road, separate from the ski area. Its conveyor lift brings riders back up for another run. Sessions are listed at one hour and 45 minutes, making tubing a compact main activity with room for lunch and an afternoon swim.
Main-lane riders must be at least 42 inches tall and ride one person per tube. The separate Wee Bowl snow-play area caters to smaller children with an accompanying adult. The operator sells sessions online up to two weeks ahead once bookings open; use the session calendar for your visit.
04 · Snow days & warm eveningsWinter activities without skiing
Start with breakfast, walk beside Lake Junaluska and return for an indoor swim. The Museum of the Cherokee People makes a good cultural day out. A Maggie Valley Jeep outing adds a driver-led adventure when the operator offers departures for your dates.
Wheels Through Time closes seasonally, and winter weather can close the Parkway. Use our gentler walks and Cherokee guide for lower-elevation alternatives, then take a ridge drive when access and visibility are good.
05 · Snow days & warm eveningsA two-day winter plan
Day one: choose skiing or a booked tubing session, have lunch, then head back for an indoor swim and dinner. Day two: start slowly, make a lower-elevation outing or a confirmed guided tour the focus, and leave time to return before dark. Put the more weather-sensitive activity into the best forecast window.
For Christmas or Thanksgiving, reserve the meal separately from the hotel and activity. Holiday opening patterns vary. Our restaurant guide helps shortlist a dining style; contact the restaurant for that particular holiday service.
06 · Snow days & warm eveningsWinter hotels: warm water or a special room
Comfort Inn combines an indoor pool, a shared hot tub and breakfast. Jonathan Creek Inn pairs an indoor pool with a water-side setting. Choose Smoky Falls Lodge for a lodge evening and select a named fireplace or jetted-tub category when that is the feature you want.
A seasonal outdoor pool adds little to a winter plan. Put the indoor amenities, room layout and evening meal first, then use our arrival guide to organize the drive and transport. Stay in the valley for the mix of snow activities and easy evenings.
Useful answersQuestions for your trip
Does Maggie Valley get snow in December?
Snow is possible, but a snow-covered town is not assured for a particular visit. Book an operating ski or tubing session and a hotel with indoor swimming for the rest of the day.
What can we do in winter without skiing?
Try a Tube World session, a lower-elevation walk, a Cherokee museum visit or a confirmed Jeep tour, then return for dinner and an indoor swim.
Is Wheels Through Time open all winter?
No. The museum follows a seasonal calendar. Use its published hours for your travel dates and choose other indoor activities for a midwinter stay.
