Ski Area and Tube World are different stops

Cataloochee Ski Area is on Ski Lodge Road above Maggie Valley. Tube World is down on Soco Road at 4721 Soco Road. Skiing and snow tubing use different locations and bookings, so a lift pass does not automatically add a tubing session.

Give skiing or snowboarding a full slope day. Choose Tube World for a shorter snow activity without learning to ski. A family can enjoy either, but trying to fit a first ski lesson and a tubing session into the same short visit makes the day unnecessarily busy.

02 · A winter break in the mountains

First ski day: book the lesson and rental time

Allow time for the drive up Ski Lodge Road, parking, equipment fitting and your lesson meeting point. A beginner lesson gives first-time skiers a useful start before spending more time on the slopes.

Choose lift access, rental equipment and instruction for each person in your group. Use the operator’s operating calendar and snow report for the available sessions and terrain, then keep the evening for dinner and an indoor swim.

03 · A winter break in the mountains

Tube World suits a shorter winter outing

The main tubing lanes have a 42-inch minimum height. Each rider uses a separate tube, and the conveyor takes riders back uphill. A separate Wee Bowl is advertised for younger children who do not meet the main-lane height requirement.

Book the session for the right location and age mix. Tubing is especially useful when the family wants snow play without committing to a lesson-and-rental day. Follow it with lunch or an indoor swim rather than another long mountain drive.

04 · A winter break in the mountains

Choose a hotel for the winter evening

Comfort Inn combines breakfast, an indoor pool and a shared hot tub. Jonathan Creek Inn adds an indoor pool to a creekside setting. Both give families an indoor activity after the slopes.

Route 19 Inn sits at the western end near Tube World. Its outdoor pool is seasonal, so choose it for the location and accommodation style rather than expecting winter swimming. A hotel in town gives you a simpler arrival than a remote hillside rental.

05 · A winter break in the mountains

Choose dates from the operating calendar

Use Cataloochee’s dated operating calendar and snow report to plan your slope day. Snowmaking helps the resort build and maintain its skiing surface when temperatures allow; opening dates and terrain vary with conditions.

Stay in the valley for a straightforward arrival, then leave time for the climb to the ski area. Our winter guide brings together hotels, tubing and activities for the rest of your stay.
