Waterfall & Cherokee Jeep Adventure
A varied half day of waterfall scenery, Cherokee-area history and mountain views, with a driver-guide from Maggie Valley.
- About 3.5–4 hours
- Driver-guide included
- Scenic Tours & Adventures departure

Two full days cover the valley, a guided adventure and the Parkway. Add a third for Cataloochee’s historic landscape and elk country.
These plans assume two or three full sightseeing days after arrival. Check into a Soco Road hotel, have dinner in the valley and keep the first evening easy. A creek-facing room gives you something to enjoy even when a long drive leaves little appetite for another outing.
Before fixing the order, place Wheels Through Time on a day the museum operates and give Waterrock Knob your clearest weather window. You can swap the two core days without losing the plan’s shape.
Start with Wheels Through Time and allow around two to three hours. After lunch, drive west on US-19 toward Soco Gap and stop at Soco Falls beyond the Parkway crossing. Use the signed parking area for the short waterfall outing.
Continue to Waterrock Knob when the Parkway approach is open and visibility is good. Enjoy the parking-area outlook or add the uphill trail. Finish with dinner back in Maggie Valley. This works as a relaxed scenic day when you avoid adding Cherokee’s full attraction list as well.
Book the waterfall Jeep trip for a guide-driven sightseeing morning, or the UTV for the hands-on ride. Keep the afternoon flexible for a creekside break, a swim or browsing along Soco Road. The tour’s landscape stops give the day its main event; there is no need to fill every remaining hour.
Spend the evening in Waynesville for a downtown stroll before dinner. If your family prefers to stay put, choose a hotel with an indoor pool and make the afternoon part of the holiday.
With a third full day, visit Cataloochee Valley for historic buildings, open fields and the chance to see elk. Use the Cove Creek approach and allow generously for its narrow, winding gravel section. A picnic and a slow drive through the valley make a better plan than a rushed wildlife stop.
At the October 2026 review, park notices still listed damaged trails in this area. Keep this day focused on the accessible valley landscape and approved stops, using the live park notice for your route. Oconaluftee is the easier paved-road alternative for a park-and-history outing.
On a wet day, put the museum first if it is open, then enjoy a long lunch or an indoor swim. A high-elevation overlook brings little value in thick cloud. Keep waterfalls for conditions that make footing and the approach comfortable.
In winter, swap the Parkway day for Cataloochee skiing or a Tube World session. Those are separate locations. Choose an indoor-pool hotel on Soco Road and plan around the ski area’s published operating calendar, rather than a fixed snow guarantee.
Jonathan Creek Inn suits visitors who want creekside downtime and indoor swimming. Smoky Falls Lodge works for a lodge evening and motorcycle parking. Comfort Inn gives families breakfast and an indoor pool; Meadowlark puts you close to the museum area.
Use one base for the whole weekend. Changing hotels between Maggie Valley and Cherokee adds packing for a relatively compact trip. If you want a longer cabin holiday, add time for meals and evenings at the property rather than expanding the driving list every day.
