Start with a compact route

The simplest first drive follows US-19 from Maggie Valley to Soco Gap, then the Parkway toward Waterrock Knob. Enjoy the overlook, choose whether to add the summit trail, then return to the valley. Allow a half day as a planning budget, with longer if you hike and stop for a picnic.

This route keeps the panorama central to the outing. You do not need to drive a long stretch of Parkway to feel above the valley. The shorter plan also leaves room for a museum visit or a creekside evening.

Soco Gap to Waterrock Knob

Soco Gap links US-19 with the Parkway at milepost 455.7. Waterrock Knob’s access road is at milepost 451.2, toward lower milepost numbers. That makes the Parkway section between the junction and the turn about 4.5 miles; the visitor-center access road adds the final climb.

At the top, the parking-area outlook is worthwhile on its own. Add the uphill summit trail when everyone wants a walk and there is enough daylight for the return. See our Waterrock Knob guide for that decision.

Add Soco Falls before the ridge

A waterfall-and-view afternoon starts with US-19 beyond Soco Gap toward Cherokee. Visit Soco Falls using the newer signed parking area, then return to the Parkway junction for the drive toward Waterrock Knob. Finish back in Maggie Valley for dinner.

This is an out-and-back combination with a short detour, rather than a continuous loop. The waterfall and overlook give the afternoon two distinct highlights. A full Cherokee cultural visit belongs on a different day if you want a relaxed pace.

Choose a clear afternoon for the ridge

Take a warmer layer and put this drive on the clearest afternoon of your stay. Waterrock Knob can be windy, cool or cloud-covered while the valley is mild. Allow enough daylight for any summit walk and the return drive.

Use the current Parkway road status for the Soco Gap–Waterrock approach. Seasonal weather and maintenance can change access.

Enjoy the scenery with a driver-guide

Book the local Jeep trip for a half day of mountain scenery, waterfall stops and Cherokee-area history with a driver-guide. It is a good choice when you want to put the driving in someone else’s hands.

Use the independent route above for this specific Parkway drive. Our tour comparison covers the separate Jeep and UTV itineraries, meeting point and driver requirements.

Book a base that leaves room for the evening

The western end of Maggie Valley is a useful starting point for the Soco Gap approach. Jonathan Creek Inn offers creekside time and an indoor pool, while Route 19 Inn adds a motor-inn setting with seasonal outdoor swimming.

For the first weekend, combine this scenic half day with Wheels Through Time and one guided adventure on the other full day. A room you want to return to is part of that plan, especially when the mountain weather changes the order.
